If you're a pet owner, there is always the chance that your pet could develop a problem with ticks. Your pet could get fleas as well. Both fleas and ticks are dangerous parasites that can cause a lot of health problems. Ticks are dangerous to pets. They are small insects that attach to a pet's skin and then drink their blood. If any ticks get onto your pet, it can be important that you get rid of them quickly with a tick treatment. There are a number of ways that you can kill them. There are a lot of tick removal products on the market that can help quickly kill these parasites. Once they are gone, your pet's pet care can include a tick prevention medication. This can help keep these germ-carrying vermin off your pet and safeguard their health. If you need to see a veterinarian in Fairfax Station, VA, for tick prevention, call our animal hospital for an appointment. We at Crosspointe Animal Hospital are here to help.

Ticks and Dangerous Diseases

A tick will lock onto your pet's skin and then bite them to drink the blood. This helps keep them in contact with the bloodstream of the pet for as long as they stay attached. This is plenty of time for the tick to spread bacteria into the bloodstream and cause a bacterial infection. Many of these can be extremely serious, and some can lead to the death of the pet. Ticks can cause Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Many of these diseases can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, and this can result in a pet getting dehydrated. Dehydration can be fatal to pets. That's why it's so important to use tick removal and to get a preventative tick treatment for all your pets.

Medications for Tick Prevention

There are a number of medications available to help keep pets free from ticks. These can be provided by, or at least recommended by, a veterinarian on our veterinary team so that your pet does not develop infestations of ticks. Many of these are chewable medications that are flavored and easy for your pet to take. Some last for a month, others for a few months, etc. There are also injections that can be given that last for up to a year. There are also pills that are available for certain tick medications. No matter which type your pet is prescribed, it can be important for them to take this medication and remain tick free.
