Pet Infections

Despite taking precautions to prevent bacterial and fungal infections in our pets, dogs and cats are subject to both. In both cases, the key is early identification and treatment to help ensure the infection does not get out of hand. If you are in the Fairfax Station, VA, area and need an emergency vet near you, consider our team at the Crosspointe Animal Hospital.

How Pets Become Infected

Dogs commonly get infections from scratches or cuts received when outside or from chronic skin conditions. Both present openings for bacteria to enter the skin and cause infections. Bathing your dog after he gets dirty can help reduce the risk of infection, as does cleaning the folds of skin on dogs with wrinkly faces and managing your pet’s overall condition, including preventing fleas.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Common symptoms of bacterial skin infections include red or inflamed skin, hair loss, and crusted skin. Chewing and itching the skin is also a sign of an infection, which often worsens things.

If a pet displays these symptoms, bring him to our animal hospital so that a veterinarian on our team can get him the care he needs. Some bacterial infections are more serious than others and need more potent medications. In addition, some bacterial infections can transfer to and harm humans.

Treating Pet Infections

Contact a veterinarian on our team if you suspect your pet has a skin infection. The failure to treat some infections can allow them to spread through the body, becoming systemic, even life-threatening.

Of course, most infections are quite treatable, and the specific treatment will vary based on the nature and severity of the infection. Here are some treatment methods we may recommend for treating pet infections:

●          Consistent cleaning of the infected area

●          Applying topical treatments

●          Administering antibiotics

●          Administering anti-fungal treatments

Infections can recur due to contact with contaminated bedding and other materials in the house. These may require regular washing or disposal to avoid reinfection.
