Bloodwork

Just as with people, pets need bloodwork to help see if they're healthy or if medical treatment is needed. At Crosspointe Animal Hospital in Fairfax Station, VA, we can examine your pet and perform a blood test if it is necessary, which will provide us with the status of their health and let us know if they need treatment for any conditions. Before visiting us, learn more about the importance of bloodwork below:

Why Are Blood Tests Necessary for Pets?

If your pet is showing signs of illness, a CBC test may help provide answers. This is a complete blood count test that determines if there is a high white blood cell count, infection, or anemia. If your pet's bloodwork is outside of the normal range, this can help us determine the cause of a medical problem and allow us to provide treatment.

A PCV test may also be needed, which specifically looks for anemia and determines the severity of the condition. Since other medical problems can lead to anemia in your pet, it’s important to find out the cause. That can help us provide the most suitable treatment plan to help your cat or dog feel healthy again.

Does Getting Bloodwork Hurt?

Bloodwork will not hurt your pet. They may feel some discomfort when the blood is drawn, just like people do when they are getting a blood test. While blood tests are common, they are important in letting our vets learn about your pet’s overall health. Not only that, we can also find out if they have any illnesses and monitor these. You can prepare your furry friend for bloodwork by making sure they get plenty of rest the night before and that they are hydrated.

How Long Does It Take to Get Results?

Receiving the results of a blood test doesn't take long. We outsource some of our routine bloodwork and usually receive the results within a couple of days. If your pet is experiencing a medical issue, we can perform in-house bloodwork. Generally, results of in-house testing come back that same day and we can provide treatment quickly.
